02-Oct-2011 E Is For Echo

Or Elephants… or Elmer…

It’s also for eating out, excellent entertainment and Eldon Square – although not all at once. Having put on some extra weight recently we started being good with food, less cheese sauces, more salad, less wine etc. However, temptation was put firmly before us when we met up with friends Barbara, Barry and Anthony for a meal and a catch up natter… two courses for a tenner; good carvery, ginormous Yorkshire puddings and help yourself to veggies et al. We were tempted by the sticky toffee pudding and cheesecake and various ice creams, but had the strength to say no. Then it was back to the holiday cottage they were renting in the back of beyond (an incredible wow place in the middle of nowhere, peaceful, no light pollution) – and guess what we had with our coffee??? Birthday cake, biscuits, chocolate… ah well, may as well go the whole hog. Good food, good company, good surroundings, goodnight!

We’ve not seen Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby play for quite some time, so it was great to catch up with them at Barnard Castle… a rather different setting this time, we had a three course meal in the Teesdale Restaurant after which we sat back and enjoyed the music. Cathryn’s wonderful singing and Brian’s exquisite guitar playing combine to showcase their great songwriting… a veritable masterclass in entertainment. And they are such warm and generous people too, an evening not to be forgotten. The following day we got another earful of excellence as they graced the studios of Bishop FM on Terry Ferdinand’s Saturday afternoon show. We look forward to seeing them again in Richmond at the end of November.

E is for Elephants and Elmer… since writing ‘Old Fashioned Christmas’ we’ve been mulling over ideas for a YouTube video to promote the song, and we’ve been drafting a storyboard to help us along. Jimmy has been examining video effects and editing software extensions etc (he loves all this digital stuff!).  So, where do elephants fit in? ‘Not very Christmas-y’ you might think, and you’d be right. But did you know??? Val loves elephants… she has a collection of them at home – 75 of various shapes and sizes at home before today. (No, not the real thing, but toys and ornaments spread around the house – not quite every room, but not far off.)

Well… today, in Eldon Square, we bought number 76 – a lovely little patchwork Elmer in a snow globe. Now the connection starts to emerge… Elmer might not make it into the video, but the snow globe might.

There ends today’s blog. As ever, thanks for reading.
